One of the original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated how corporate owner Unilever prevented the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with his partner, announced how he will independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company

This latest development escalates the continuing tension among the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.

Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem for Support

The entrepreneur revealed via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Previous Activism plus Recent Changes

Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.

The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions

The founder revealed how he plans to create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.

The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following many years of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

Previously, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
