Both Deceased Students Named in Brown University Shooting as Police Persist in Search for Perpetrator.

The pair of scholars who died in the recent mass shooting at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter carried on following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also shared words of sorrow on social media, stating: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, family members said.

The victim's identification was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were wounded in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a police operation at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Community Anxiety

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our public”.

The gunman began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that raided the inn recovered two handguns and magazines when the individual was arrested, as was reported.

Those Hurt

Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was released from the hospital, mentioned Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Additional Memorials

Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his bright future.”

National Context

The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in this year, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
