California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is experiencing dryness. This landmark event comes on the heels of grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened fire dangers and pressured its massive agricultural sector.
An Update Indicates Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program confirmed that the entire state is free from dry or drought conditions. This shift came after weeks of above-normal rainfall that helped fill key lakes like Oroville and Shasta well above their typical levels.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a climate scientist.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
Achieving this status involved intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in recent years, resulting in widespread flooding, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were still classified as abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.
The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average
However, authorities caution that being out of drought should not be confused with having no water worries. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for future water availability. Water officials have emphasized that it is too early to make predictions for the months ahead.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, attention turns to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health during the rest of the year.
