“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
