Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward fans during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
Recent Controversies and Media Attention
The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its recent title shortcomings.
The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their position or financial standing.
