Liverpool's Manager Offers No Excuses and Pledges to Plot Way Out of Malaise
Arne Slot stated he needed to “examine my own performance” following Liverpool endured a 6th loss in seven Premier League games at home against Forest and affirmed he would discover a solution from the title holders' poor run.
Nottingham Forest, fighting against the drop before kick off, delivered the largest win at Liverpool's stadium in their history as the Merseyside club slipped to an eighth loss in 11 matches in all competitions. The British record signing, Alexander Isak, was once more unnoticeable and the home side argued Murillo’s first goal should have been disallowed for comparable grounds to the captain's disallowed effort against City before the national team pause. But the manager conceded the buck stopped with him and offered no alibis.
“No one wants to hear me now speaking about officiating calls if you are defeated 3-0 in your own stadium to Nottingham Forest,” said the Reds' boss. “I ought to look at my own role initially and my team, but it does show you how a score can change the momentum of a match. Earlier I was just waiting for us to net a goal. Afterwards we hardly created any chances.
“Of course there is a way out, particularly with the quality players we have. No matter if you triumph or lose when you look back you are always thinking: ‘In which areas can we improve, in what aspects can we make changes?’ but that is different from questioning your abilities.
“I want to stress I am responsible for the current losses. You are answerable when you are winning but also liable when you are losing. I can never come up with sufficient reasons for us to have the results we have. That is not good enough and I am to blame for that.”
Liverpool’s display unravelled as the coach introduced several attacking changes when pursuing the game. “It was the same on the road at Nottingham Forest last season,” he said. “I substituted Ibou [Ibrahima Konaté] off and brought on [Diogo] Jota and he found the net straight away to equalize at 1-1. Then it was brave, now it’s likely unwise.”
The Anfield side previously were defeated in back-to-back at Anfield Premier League games against Nottingham Forest in 1963. The last time they suffered back-to-back top-flight matches by a 3-0 scoreline was in the mid-60s.
Slot commented: “It was very bad. Playing at home, conceding 3-0 no matter which team you encounter is a terrible result. Surprising if you consider the first half-hour of the match. I did not witness us producing so much in the opening 30 minutes maybe the whole campaign, and the first time they arrived in our penalty area they found the back of the net.
“It wasn’t at City, but in every other game we have been the dominant side and were capable to create chances. Lately it is nearly consistently that we miss our opportunities and the attempts we concede find the net.”
