New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately following his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to our family's safety and the imperative to dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
