Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit program wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the writers are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
